It takes patience to be a golfer in the Midwest. Realistically, half of our year is spent in hibernation or trying to hone our craft from the artificial turf of golf simulators. That leaves just a few months to squeeze in as much golf as possible. One of my favorite afterwork, “quick nine” spots is Kenosha Municipal Golf Course, near Washington Park. Or to locals, “Muni”.

Location
Located at the corner of Washington Road and 22ndAvenue, and nestled just minutes away from Kenosha’s Downtown District, Muni is easily reachable from I-94 for commuters such as myself and is close to numerous, local restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Just a few blocks from the popular Big Star Drive-In and tg’s Restaurant & Pub.

Nostalgia
Muni is more than location; dedicated in 1922, you are immediately greeted by the old-world charm of the clubhouse – known for their malts – echoing with hole-in-one and “FORE” stories, alike.
Pro Tip: Stay awhile. After you take advantage of the twilight rates, enjoy a brew or a bite at the clubhouse!

Play
Prepare to be tested by lush banks of foliage and mature trees; not-so-innocent creeks, and challenging yet forgiving fairways and greens as you snake through this Par 34 course.
Pro Tip: Bring bug spray – especially if you plan on spending most of your round in the rough.

Par 3s and 4s
Muni features two Par 3s – Holes 1 and 5 – that can’t be underestimated. Though relatively straight, elevated tee boxes, water hazards and carefully-placed pins can ruin your round quickly.
Pro TipDon’t forget to adjust for the wind.

Par 4s
The remainder of the course is Par 4s. The straighter holes - 2, 3, and 8 – feature forgiving fairways, but pose issues around the green with strategically-placed sand traps.
Pro Tip: Play it short unless you are good out of the sand…and let’s be honest, no one is good out of the sand.

Hole 4, also relatively straight, is a difficult play due to the ravine and creek combo that can quickly add crooked numbers to your scorecard.
Pro TipIf you hit the driver 250 to 275 yards, play it safe with a wood or high iron. That ravine is not forgiving.

In my opinion, holes 6, 7, and 9 are the most challenging, with 9 arguably being the most difficult on the course. Hole 6 doglegs left with a narrow, treelined passage about 100 yards into the fairway.
Pro Tip: Play the dogleg. If you can play the tree line to the left of the fairway, you can easily set yourself for a second shot within 75 yards.

An elevated tee box on a drivable green is always appealing, but pin placement - a willow-tree-lined, narrowing fairway, and creek running roughly 75 yards from the green - makes Hole 7 a challenge.
Pro Tip: Laying up is never a bad play – it normally sets up for a nice second shot.

Hole 9 poses the greatest threat to your scorecard at Muni. Whether the tee box is elevated or lowered, the hilled, severe dogleg right, shallow creek, and beautiful, mature willow trees hiding the green to the right of the fairway can be problematic.
Pro Tip: Play left…just not too far left. If you can keep it along the left side of the fairway before the water, you’ll have a nice view of the green.

So Muni may not be much of a secret but it is often overlooked. As part of the family of Kenosha-area golf courses, it is hidden right in the center of the city. With it’s proximity to Downtown Kenosha, affordability, and play it is a great course for my “Quick nine” tour or for visitors not looking to spend a whole day golfing. Play 9 at Muni and you’ll be able to get to all the other great things to see and do in our area, too!
